My Article for Double Page Spread
After 17 years the red hot chilli peppers have now been labelled the band that couldn’t be stopped. To say the band formed as a joke, Anthony Kiedis told us back in 2008, "You know, we never thought about being in a rock'n'roll band for ever , we only ever wanted to play one night. Then all the craziness happened’’ When the band had to say goodbye to two of their much loved band members, everyone really believed it was the end. Now with over 70 million albums being sold worldwide, we now know that no matter what came in their way they will tackle the obstacle and they will tackle it good. The outcome will always be better.
We are joined today with gorgeous new guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, who saved the band in 2009 and brought some amazing talent and some new eye candy to the band. We asked him if it's intimidating joining such an enormous musical machine much loved by millions. He tells us, "I've known the guys for a decade and this is what I've wanted to do for my whole life, although, if I think about the hugeness of it all, it triggers my anxiety’’ Seems that the anxiety was nothing but a buzz to Josh in November 2011, when the boys hit the road for their worldwide tour to promote their debut album ‘’I’m With You.’’
I-So Josh we heard that you actually came up with the name for the new album, how did that come along?
J-‘’ Yea I mean its pretty cool really, I wasn’t even thinking about the name of our album or anything. We were all in the studio one afternoon just experimenting with tracks. I don’t know why but i just scribbled down the words ‘’I’m with you’’ down on a small bit of paper, when we had all paused and were having a quick sup of water. Anthony saw it because his drink was next to my future scribble of fortune ( give’s us a cheeky wink there) and then he just said that’s it!’’
I-So are you happy that its been chosen for the album then?
J-‘’Yea I mean I don’t think flea was too impressed with the name, but it really has caught on with our fans. Now when were in the street we get fans shouting at us, I’m with you! It really feels good, as it shows support.. One day a really young boy came up to us and told me I’m with you, it was just sweet that such a young kid feels inspired by our music. I really do hope we continue to be the music for the next generation.’’
I-Flea and Kiedo’s had a quite bad upbringing in their previous albums this has been expressed through their music, what do you see for the future of the Chili Peppers?
J- ‘’Yea their past is very grim to hear. I have been friends with the boys for a long time but they never really speak about it. Flea and Anthony were childhood friends and i think they only engage in their past through music. As Anthony was only the real song writer in the band back then i think that now I’m in the band i will encourage more positivity through our music. I have wrote quite a few tracks for this album, like Monarchy or Roses and Adventures of rain dance magic!''
I-Do you feel comfortable in the band and the madness of the music industry
J-‘’ Being in the studio and writing songs hasn't been weird in the least. When i step on stage with them I don't think it's any different. I am happy with the boys and they say I came at the right time; i have been with them for so long through their fame and fortune. Anthony says that they wouldn’t of picked anyone better than me, i have so much respect for the guys and i hope our future albums bring so much creativity and inspiration to all our fans’’
